MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Xavier volleyball made quick work of Central Michigan in its final match of the Duquesne/Robert Morris Invitational by sweeping the Chippewas (25-18, 25-18, 25-14). The win improves XU to 4-2 on the season and drops CMU to 2-4.
Alex Smith and Aubree Smith had sensational matches. Alex, a middle blocker, registered 12 kills without making an error. The senior closed out the tourney with 35 kills and averaged 3.2 kills-per-set.
Aubree, Xavier's setter, organized the offensive attack and handed out 34 assists. She finished the tournament with 125 assists, averaging 11.4 assists-per-set. The efforts of the two sisters earned them spots on the all-tourney team.
"I'm very proud to be coach of this team," said head coach Mike Johnson. "Coming off a tough match, we were faced with only a few hours rest and a good Central Michigan team. What I admire most about this group is our ability to be determined and respond to adversity."
"It was a great team win and a great contribution from everyone - both from those who played and those who didn't," continued Johnson. "This was by far our most complete win and we'll look to keep improving as time marches on."
Xavier wasted little time in each of the three sets, taking early leads and then extending the margin as the set went on. As a team, Xavier converted on over 38 percent of its attacks.
In addition to the Smith sisters, Abbey Bessler registered eight kills and eight digs and Sarah Brown put down six kills of her own. Defensively, Alex Blair and Alex Smith each had five blocks, while libero Lauren Metzger dug 12 balls.
The Musketeers will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 10 when the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks come to town for a 7 p.m. tilt at Cintas Center.
