Senior Kelly Ruth got under a team-high tying 14 digs versus Notre Dame

CINCINNATI - The Xavier volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (19-25, 21-25, 25-18, 18-25) decision to visiting Notre Dame (RV) Friday night in its opening match of the 2009 Xavier Invitational. The Musketeers will face No. 7 Michigan tomorrow evening at 5:30.
The Musketeers were led by freshman Alex Smith with 11 kills while senior Kelly Ruth and freshman Stephanie Vorherr tied with a team-high 14 digs. Smith had four blocks on the night and junior Claire Paszkiewicz set 31 assists.
Xavier (1-3) control the first set early on but the Fighting Irish got back into the set with a 4-0 run to take the 8-7 lead. UND did not relinquish the advantage for the rest of the frame, taking the first game, 25-19.
Notre Dame (3-1) and XU kept the second set close throughout most of the game as there were 10 ties and three lead changes. The Musketeers pulled to within one near the end, 22-21, but the Irish scored three straight to end the set with a 25-21 mark.
After intermission, Xavier came out on fire jumping out to the 8-4 lead. XU never looked back in the set, going up by as many as eight. Holding set point at 24-18, an Irish attack error gave the Musketeers the seven-point win.
UND controlled most of the final set as the teams were tied only once, 1-1. XU got to within five, but Notre Dame closed out the frame, 25-18, and took the 3-1 match victory.
The Irish were led by Serinity Phillips with a match-high 19 kills and Frenchy Silva with a match-high 23 digs.
Notre Dame and Tennessee are set to play in tomorrow's first match scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
