Smith Named All-Tournament; XU Falls In Final Match Of Xavier Invitational
Sept. 1, 2012
Aubree Smith was named to the all-tournament team after recording 106 assists in the Musketeers three matches. Smith recorded a tournament-high-tying 46 assists in Xavier's match against Ole Miss.
Xavier fell behind by as many as six points in the first set, but a kill and service ace by Kelsey Dunaway on back-to-back plays helped the Musketeers erase the deficit and tie the set at 23-all. Marquette's Danielle Carlson and XU's Amé White exchanged kills, but the Golden Eagles closed out the set, 26-24, with a pair of assisted blocks.
After falling behind by eight-points, 22-14, in the second set, Xavier used a 7-1 run to pull within a couple of points and put some pressure on Marquette. The Golden Eagles responded with back-to-back kills to claim the set, 25-21.
The Musketeers regrouped during intermission and were on the attack from the onset of the third set. Xavier enjoyed its largest lead of the set, 12-8, after a kill by Smith. Marquette responded with five-unanswered points and forced Xavier to call a timeout. Trailing, 23-21, late in the set Xavier put up three-straight points on a solo block by Smith, a service ace from Sarah Brown and a solo block by Dunway. The Golden Eagles staved off the Musketeers set point and eventually recorded consecutive kills to end the match with a 27-25 score in the third set.
Brown finished the tournament with 40 kills and 30 digs. Alex Smith (23), White (20) and Dunaway (20) each surpassed 20 kills in the three-event.
Xavier will prepare for a mid-week match at Miami (OH) in Oxford, Ohio. The 7 p.m. match will be played Millett Hall.
