A freshman outside hitter from Hebron, Ky., Bessler opened her collegiate career with an outstanding effort. She registered her first-career double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs in the win over the Norse. Bessler then closed out the tournament with a career-best 13 kills against the Tigers.
Senior outside hitter Sarah Brown joined Bessler with a 10-kill, 18-dig double-double against NKU. Brown was a steady presence for XU throughout the tournament and finished with 28 kills and 31 digs.
Makayla Agin, a sophomore outside hitter, registered a career-high 14 kills to lead Xavier against Clemson. Agin's previous best was nine kills last season at Temple.
Aubree Smith organized XU's offensive attack and handed out 41 assists against NKU and 39 more versus Clemson. Through the first three matches, Aubree is averaging 11.3 assists-per-set.
"I thought our team got better with each set that we played," said head coach Mike Johnson. "What I admire most about this group is their commitment to improvement and to being the best that they can be. We are on our way."
Xavier will begin preparation for the Duquesne/Robert Morris Invitational, which will be held in Pittsburgh, Pa., from Sept. 6-7. The Musketeers will open the tournament at Robert Morris on Friday at 6 p.m.
