Freshman Jesse Earl had 45 digs in her debut weekend as a Musketeer.
CINCINNATI - In the final match of the Queen City Invitational, Xavier beat crosstown rival Cincinnati in straight sets. Xavier concluded the first weekend of play unscathed at 3-0.
Sophomore Abbey Bessler was spotless while recording her second double-double of the day. Bessler put down 13 kills and chipped in 11 digs without any attacking errors.
"It was great to close the day out with a solid performance," said head coach Mike Johnson. "We continued to grow as the day went on and I was really happy with our growth. Each game we knew if we just stayed after it, one of our servers would break the game open. Sariah (Suryadevara) did it in the first game and Aubree (Smith) did it in the second and third. Beyond that, from the starters to the non-starters, it was a great team effort."
Xavier did not look back after the close first set winning the next two sets, 25-17 and 25-19. Bessler led the way in kills and digs with 11 and eight, respectively, in sets two and three. Xavier put up eight blocks in the final two sets as they finished the match with 11 total.
Senior Aubree Smith finished the day with a match high 28 assists. Suryadevara and Earl added 10 digs to the final stat line for Xavier. Makaya Agin landed 11 kills and posted a team-high .375 hitting percentage.
Xavier's next match will be against Oakland as part of the 2014 MIZZOU Tiger Invitational at 5 p.m. EST in Columbia, Mo.
