Aug. 30, 2008
COLUMBUS, Ohio – With a 3-1 win over Toledo in its final match of the Ohio State Sports Imports Classic, the Xavier volleyball team finished the opening weekend of the 2008 season with a perfect 3-0 mark. Three Musketeers were named to the All-Tournament Team with junior Hillary Otte earning Most Valuable Player accolades. Senior Megan Hellmann, who was named the tournament's Defensive Specialist, and junior Kelly Ruth joined Otte on the team.
The first set was close throughout as both teams battled to hold an advantage. Toledo jumped out to an early lead, 4-1, but Xavier brought the game even at five apiece. The Rockets would go up by as many as six but the Musketeers got back in the frame and tied the set at 24-all. After back-to-back kills from junior Lauren Kaminsky and Otte, XU held set point at 26-25 and UT called timeout. Out of the break, a Rocket attacking error decided the set, 27-25, in favor of the Musketeers.
Toledo had a slow start to the second game as Xavier went ahead 3-1. But the Rockets battled back and took an advantage on an XU service error, 6-5. Toledo never trailed again in the set and finished the frame by rattling off five straight points. The Rockets took the game, 25-16, and tied the match at one set apiece.
In the third set, the two squads again pushed the frame to extra points. Toledo took the lead early in the set and held control for most of the frame. A service ace by senior Jenn Welsh gave XU its first lead at 24-23 at UT decided to take a minute to talk it over. After the timeout, Xavier was able to secure a third-set win off consecutive kills from Ruth and Otte, 28-26.
Xavier never trailed in the fourth set and went on several runs in the deciding frame. The Musketeers closed out the match with a string of five straight points as a Rocket ball handling error ended the set with Xavier ahead by 13, 25-12. XU took the match three sets to one.
The Musketeers return to action next weekend as they are set to compete in the Georgia Tech Regency Suites Classic Sept. 5-6. Xavier will take on Georgia State on Friday at 4 p.m.
