CINCINNATI - The Xavier volleyball team broke in the newly renovated Cintas Center court with a 3-1 victory over UC Irvine Friday night. Alex Blair (11), Abbey Bessler (12) and Makayla Agin (10) tallied double-digit kills in the match.

The Anteaters (0-1) took the first set of the night, 25-23. The set was back and forth with the largest lead being only four points. Tied at 23, an attacking error by XU and a kill by UCI's Allison Lee led to the Anteaters clinching the set.

Sariah Suryadevara opened the second set for XU with back-to-back service aces. Following a kill from Bessler, the Musketeers (1-0) went up 3-0 and did not look back. XU held the lead the entire set, winning 25-15.

Set three saw the two schools tied at 11 before the Musketeers pulled away for a 25-20 win. XU tallied 13 kills and three service aces in the set.

XU kept the momentum going to take the fourth set, 25-14, and move to 4-1 in home openers under head coach Mike Johnson. The Musketeers put down 14 kills and three service aces in the final set of the night.

"I loved the way we played tonight," said Johnson. "It took us a little bit to get into rhythm and I was proud of the way our team pushed through. Once we got going, I thought we played a really well balanced, complete volleyball game.

"It was also wonderful to see five different players in their very first college match. They all played well and I'm sure we have a bright future ahead."

Senior setter Aubree Smith dished out 31 assists while freshman Jesse Earl totaled 16 digs. Suryadevara also tallied double digit digs with 13 and served five aces.

XU continues Queen City Invitational action on Saturday at 12 p.m. against the Dukes of Duquesne followed by crosstown rival Cincinnati at 6 p.m. All matches are played in Cintas Center.
