Murray State (0-1) came out strong in the second set, jumping out to a 5-0 lead before Xavier could score a point. The Racers held the advantage until the Musketeers rallied for five straight points to get their first lead of the set, 17-16. XU held the advantage until MSU rattled off four points to go ahead, 24-23, before a kill from senior Lauren Kaminsky knotted the two at 24 apiece. Back-to-back Racer kills gave Murray the set, 26-24.
The third set was a battle through the first 11 points before Xavier used a 5-1 run to open up the game for the Musketeers, 16-12, and straight into a Murray State timeout. The Racers would only muster two more points as XU cruised to the 25-14 third-set win to stay alive in the match.
The Musketeers opened the fourth set with back-to-back kills as the two squads traded points until XU retook the lead at 12-11. Xavier stretched its advantage to six, 19-13, before Murray put together an 8-2 run to notch the set at 21-all. Holding set point at 24-23, a kill from Otte tied the match at two sets apiece.
The Racers wouldn't go down easy as the fifth and deciding set was tight through the first seven points. Three Musketeer kills and a Racer attack error pushed XU ahead by five, 13-8. Murray rattled off three points to pull within two, 14-12, but again Otte sealed the deal with a kill to end the match. XU took the contest, 3-2.
The Musketeers return to action Saturday morning with an 11:30 a.m. matchup with Kansas in their second match of the Middle Tennessee Invitational.
