Toledo, Ohio - In its last match of the weekend, the Xavier Musketeer volleyball team swept the Jaguars of IUPUI, 30-24, 30-16 and 30-25. Two Musketeers posted double-double's in the match as Xavier moves to 4-0 on the season while IUPUI drops to 2-2.
Senior Jill Quayle, sophomore Kelly Ruth and freshman Katie Russell each earned All-Tournament teams honors for their performance at the Rocket Classic with Quayle taking home Tournament MVP accolades as well.
IUPUI was able to keep the first game close to start out the contest. Neither team was able to muster a lead larger than one point until a Jaguar attack error put the Musketeers up by two, 7-5. The lead then grew to six, 18-12, for XU after back-to-back kills by Ruth. Xavier would not give up the advantage as it continued to hold no less than a four-point lead the close the frame. Ruth used an exclamation point to wrap up the game when she smashed her team-high seventh kill to score the last point of the frame as Xavier took the first game, 30-24.
After a quick 4-1 start to the second game, Xavier's 5-2 run forced IUPUI to take a timeout. The Musketeers took a commanding 14 point lead after back-to-back Jaguar attacking errors followed by a kill by freshman Shannon Voors and a service ace by Russell. XU would close out the second frame with a 7-3 scoring edge to put the final score at 30-16. Sophomore Lauren Kaminsky led the squad in digs for this game, adding five to her match total.
The Musketeers headed into the third frame leading the match two games to one but the Jaguars were not ready to give up. IUPUI started off with 10-6 run to get ahead of XU by four. Xavier reclaimed the lead at 13-12 after a kill by Kaminsky and IUPUI was forced to call timeout. Out of the break, the Musketeers scored two straight points to extend their advantage to three. A late surge by the Jaguars pulled them within four but freshman Claire Paszkiewicz put the game and the match away, 30-25, with a kill as the Musketeers swept.
Kaminsky posted her second double-double of the day with 15 kills and 11 digs while Russell also tallied a double-double for the match with 1o kills and 10 digs. Ruth had a team high 14 digs junior Jenn Welsh dished out 35 assists. The team collected a .411 hitting percentage (64-11-129) for the match.
The Musketeers will open their home portion of the 2007 season on Tuesday, Aug. 28, as they take on Butler in Cintas Center with the first serve set for 7 p.m.
