Cleveland State jumped out to an early 6-2 lead to open the first game of the match but Xavier battled back to pull within one, 14-13, after an 11-8 run. The next three points were tough for the Musketeers as the Vikings put together a seven point drive to stretch the lead back out to five, 21-16. Despite XU's best effort to overcome the deficit, CSU was able to maintain its lead and the Vikings picked up a win in the first game, 30-22. Sophomore Kelly Ruth lead the Musketeers in kills (4) in the first frame and junior Jenn Welsh tallied 10 assists.

The Musketeers rattled off five straight to open the second game on three consecutive kills by senior Jill Quayle and two errors by the Vikings. After CSU was unable to gain on XU's lead, the Vikings took a timeout to talk it over with the score at 8-3. Quayle and sophomore Lauren Kaminsky each smashed out six kills while Welsh dished out 16 helpers in the second frame.

Kaminsky was active early in the third game with three kills as Xavier leapt out to a 9-3 lead. Cleveland State called a timeout trying to curb the Xavier attack and was able to score five straight points out of the break to pull within one, 9-8. A 5-1 run by the Musketeers would stretch their lead out to seven, 19-12, resulting in another Vikings timeout. Although CSU would cut XU's lead to two, the Blue and White would not be stopped, winning game three by five, 30-25. Welsh added 17 more assists to her match total and Kaminsky had six more kills in the game.

With a 2-1 advantage heading into the fourth frame, the Musketeers were ready to put the match away but the Vikings had other plans. XU took a 3-2 lead but CSU retaliated with an 8-2 run forcing Xavier to call a timeout with the score at 10-5 in favor of Cleveland State. Freshman Claire Paszkiewicz was inserted into the game for her first action of the day as the Musketeers rattled off four straight points on the strength of two consecutive service aces by Welsh to cut the deficit to one, 10-9.

Xavier was forced to take its second timeout of the game when Cleveland State had expanded its lead to 23-17. CSU held its advantage through the end of the frame, tying the match at two games apiece with a 30-21 fourth-game victory, forcing a fifth game. The Musketeers had not blocked a single ball through the first three games but tallied six block assists in the fourth frame, three of which were by Quayle.
Freshman Katie Russell started the fifth game with a kill and coupled with a kill by Ruth and an error by CSU, XU was up 3-0. The Musketeers went up by as many as three points five times during the fifth game before taking the frame, 15-11, and the match, 3-2.
