CINCINNATI - Xavier University Athletic Director Greg Christopher announced the hiring of Christy Pfeffenberger (Peff-IN-berger) as the new head volleyball coach. Pfeffenberger most recently completed her fourth year with the Musketeers, serving as the team's associate head coach last season.
"It became clear during our search process that the best choice for a new leader for our volleyball program was already here," said Christopher. "After discussing our vacancy with other coaches and leaders in the volleyball community, it became apparent the best candidate was two doors down from my office.
"Christy has been a key part of successful programs as a player and a coach. We have lofty goals for our volleyball program. Christy shares the vision we all have to win BIG EAST Championships and enjoy success on the national level."
The Indianapolis, Ind., native was hired as Xavier's associate head coach in March of 2014 following a three-year stint as an assistant coach at Notre Dame. With the Fighting Irish, she helped mentor two AVCA All-Americans and three all-conference players, while recruiting the nation's No. 16 ranked recruiting class in 2014. She was previously on the Xavier staff from 2008-10.
"I would like to thank Greg Christopher and the search committee for giving me this amazing opportunity to lead the Xavier Volleyball program," said Pfeffenberger. "Through the search process I was able to see their commitment to the program and getting it to the next level. I`m excited for my first head coaching opportunity to be here at Xavier. I truly believe in the mission and values of the University."
All told, Pfeffenberger has 10 years of Division I coaching experience as either an assistant coach or associate head coach. She also had coaching stints at Dayton (2005) and Youngstown State (2006-07).
In four years on the Xavier bench, Pfeffenberger helped the Musketeers post a 75-49 overall record with a 43-21 mark in conference play. XU also had 12 players earn all-conference honors and two players earn AVCA All-American recognition.
In seven of her 10 years as an assistant/associate head coach, she helped her teams capture winning seasons - including trips to the NCAA Tournament in both 2005 and 2012. Pfeffenberger also has helped teams win 20 or more matches in a season on four occasions.
Pfeffenberger played collegiately at Dayton from 2000-04, where she participated in two NCAA Tournaments and was named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year in 2004. She was also tabbed an AVCA All-American in 2004 and was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-American Third Team.
Pfeffenberger takes over for Mike Johnson, who recently accepted the associate head coaching position at Notre Dame after five seasons at Xavier.
What They're Saying About Christy Pfeffenberger
Tim Horsmon, University of Dayton Head Coach
"I think Christy is a great fit at Xavier. It's a really competitive program where she's had the chance to work with great coaches. She knows the area really well for recruiting, is well liked in the community and is a hard worker so I think she's going to do great. She's an unbelievable person with strong character and is going to represent Xavier University well. I'm so excited for her to have this opportunity."

"I'm extremely happy for Christy. She was here during my freshman season and came back for my senior season so I had a chance to play with her twice.
