Pfeffenberger Named Xavier Volleyball Associate Head Coach

Pfeffenberger Rejoins XU Staff After Three Seasons At ND

Christy Pfeffenberger rejoined the Xavier coaching staff on March 1, 2014, as associate head coach following a three-year stint as an assistant coach at Notre Dame. Pfeffenberger previously coached at Xavier from 2008-2010 as an assistant coach and then associate head coach.

During her three seasons with the Fighting Irish, Pfeffenberger mentored the outside hitters, but also spent time working with both the right sides and middle blockers. She also helped coordinate the Irish's defense.

After the 2012 season, Pfeffenberger was included on the American Volleyball Coaches Associations Thirty Under 30 list for the second time in her career. She previously garnered the honor as an assistant at Xavier in 2009.

Xavier amassed a 56-37 overall record during Pfeffenberger's previous stint at Xavier. In her only season on Johnson's staff, XU put together a 20-10 campaign with runner-up finishes in both the Atlantic 10 regular season and tournament.

Pfeffenberger originally came to Xavier after spending two seasons as an assistant under Joe Bonner at Youngstown State University. She worked with all aspects of the team including managing the outside attackers, breaking down film, recruiting, academics, travel plans and several other aspects as well.

Before her time at Youngstown State, Pfeffenberger served as an assistant coach at her alma mater, the University of Dayton, under former head coach Tim Horsman. She was a part of the UD staff for the 2005 season and helped with recruiting, scouting, academics and practice plans in addition to assisting during UD's summer camps.

Pfeffenberger has also served in several other capacities within the volleyball community including as a summer and winter volleyball camp coach, an individual instructor, as a certified junior national volleyball referee and as a Junior Olympic volleyball coach.

During her collegiate career at Dayton, Pfeffenberger garnered several Atlantic 10 and national accolades in addition to participating on two NCAA Tournament teams. She was named the A-10 Player of the Year in 2004 and earned AVCA All-American honors that year as well. Pfeffenberger was named to the CoSIDA District IV All-American Third Team and also garnered A-10 Academic All-Conference accolades in 2004 as well. She is a 2005 graduate from UD with a bachelor's degree in education with a concentration in physical education and allied health.

Originally from Indianapolis, Ind., the former Christy Utnage was married to Nick Pfeffenberger during the summer of 2010 and the couple has one daughter, Caroline, born in September 2012.
