Women's Tennis Finishes 10-9 in Spring Season
The women’s tennis team capped off an impressive season by finishing fourth in the Atlantic 10 Tournament, giving them a 10-9 overall spring record. Xavier won its quarterfinal match against Fordham 4-1 in the A-10 Tournament. In the semifinals, the team lost to Massachusetts 4-0 before losing to Temple by the same score in the third place match.
After defeating Akron to start the season, the team was victorious against Western Kentucky, Morehead State, and host Eastern Kentucky in the EKU Invitational Feb. 17-18. Other notable victories came against Pittsburgh, Toledo, and Louisville. The Musketeers picked up a pair of weekly honors on April 10 when junior Emily Senich (Akron, OH/Akron Walsh Jesuit) was named Atlantic 10 Conference Women’s Tennis Player-of-the-Week while freshman teammate Kate Weightman (Tomball, TX/Klein) was named the Rookie-of-the-Week. Senich and Weightman both won their singles matches in straight sets and the pair teamed up to win their doubles match by a score of 8-0 at Dayton on April 4. Senich played all but one match at No. 1 singles, compiling a 7-11 record while finishing 7-9 at doubles. Weightman was an instant success for the team, achieving a 10-6 singles record as well as a 9-8 doubles record. Junior Beth Abraham (Rocky River, OH/Magnificat) posted an 8-9 record at singles and a 2-7 record at doubles. Junior Kerrie Kramer (Fort Mitchell, KY/Notre Dame Academy) finished with a solid 8-8 singles record while notching a win in her only doubles match. Sophomore Katy Wiles (Massillon, OH/Jackson) went 2-1 in her singles matches and finished with a 5-10 doubles record. Sophomore doubles specialists Lindsay Dressman (Edgewood, KY/Notre Dame Academy) and Maggie Nafziger (St. Louis, MO/St. Joseph’s Academy) finished 6-9 and 5-11 respectively. The tennis team will return all but two of its athletes for the 2001-02 season, as senior co-captains Natalie Palmenter (Evansville, IN/Reitz Memorial) and Tracie Fraunfelder (Toledo, OH/Springfield) graduate. Palmenter finished with an impressive 11-6 record at singles while Fraunfelder ended up with a 7-8 singles record and a 5-8 doubles record.
