CINCINNATI - The Xavier women's tennis team was given the No. 3 seed for the 2014 BIG EAST Women's Tennis Championship on Tuesday. The tournament, presented by NEW YORK LIFE, begins Thursday, April 24th at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
The Musketeers who are the third seed in the 10-team field face the No. 6 seeded Pirates of Seton Hall at 11 a.m. ET. The Pirates posted an overall 11-9 record in the spring season and a 2-3 record against BIG EAST opponents.
As a team they posted a cumulative record of 100-32 (.758 percent). All six women who competed in singles competition finished the regular season with double-digit victory records. Freshman Cristina Di Lorenzo topped the team in victories with 19 and only three losses while competing at the No. 3 singles position. Sydney Liggins and Andrea Wolf both tallied 17 victories and five losses. Lizzie Oosterbaan and Daniella Patton recorded 16 victories and Alex Brinker nabbed 15 of her own.
The power doubles pairing of Di Lorenzo and Patton remained spotless in their play until facing Toledo on March 14. The pairing finished with a record of 16-3 while seniors Allyson Westling and Wolf posted a 15-4 record. Brinker and Liggins tallied seven wins and five losses during the regular season.
Winner of the quarterfinal match plays Saturday at 9 a.m. ET against the winner of No. 2 Marquette v. No. 7 Creighton/No. 10 Butler match. Loser of the quarterfinal match will play a consolation match at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
