April 10, 2013
CINCINNATI - Xavier tennis freshmen Zach Mueck and Alex Brinker were named the Atlantic 10 Co-Rookie and Rookie of the Week, respectively, on Tuesday for their dominating play last weekend for the Musketeers
The awards are the second of the spring for Mueck and the third for Brinker. Combined with their teammates Xavier's teams have combined to capture 10 weekly honors from the league this year, the second most of any school in the conference.
Mueck, who actually earned co-rookie honors, won the award after posting five wins for the Musketeers last week. The West Chester, Ohio product netted wins from the No. 3 singles spot against Wright State's Ricardo Pineda (6-1, 6-2), Marist's Will Reznek (6-4, 3-6, 6-1) and Fordham's J.J. Tauil (6-4, 6-3), improving to 17-4 overall and 7-0 against conference opponents. Mueck partnered with Michael Moe and Adam Krull for No. 3 doubles victories against Wright State and Fordham.
Brinker posted her 17th consecutive victory from the No. 2 singles spot last week, taking straight set wins against Fordham's Sarah Ali (6-2, 6-2) and Rhode Island's Kathleen Uy (6-2, 6-2). During that streak, the freshman has dropped just three sets and has not lost a match since Jan. 20 (Rebecca Shine, Louisville). Brinker also picked up two doubles victories over Fordham and Rhode Island with teammate Megan Morris, leading the Musketeers to a dominant 8-0 team record against conference opponents.
The Musketeers will close out their regular season when both teams visit St. Bonaventure on Saturday. The women's team will then head to the league championship beginning April 18 in Charlottesville, Va. Xavier's men will begin their shot at a conference title on April 26 at the Linder Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio.
