Women’s Tennis Cruises Past Akron
CINCINNATI – The Xavier University women’s tennis team extended its unbeaten record to 4-0 with a 7-0 blanking of the visiting University of Akron Zips on Friday afternoon at the Mercy Fairfield Tennis Courts.
Junior Lauren Clary continues to inch closer to the Xavier career singles record as she picked up a straight set defeat of Akron’s Diana Serafini (6-0, 6-0). Clary moves to 13-2 on the year including a 2-0 record over Serafini. The two previously met in Clary’s first match of the year at the Akron Invitational where Clary picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win.
In number two singles, Kristen Clary dropped only two points to Jenna Larson en route to a 6-2, 6-0 victory.
Freshman Jackie Vilines also picked up a straight set win by a mark of 6-0, 6-0 over Jennifer Ales. Vilines improves her record to 12-2 with today’s win.
Rounding out the singles wins for the Musketeers were Stephanie Bauer with a 6-0, 6-1 win and Emily Tuchscherer with a 6-0, 6-1 victory.
The closest match of the afternoon took place in number one singles where the team of Kristen Clary and Kate Weightman made their first appearance of the year in the number one slot. Akron countered with Stephanie Miles and Jenna Larson, but Clary and Weightman proved too much for the Zips as they came away with an 8-6 victory.
In number two singles, Kate Lohner and Tuchscherer combined for an 8-0 shutout of Akron’s Mindy Price and Courtney Brenkus.
Finishing off the great Xavier effort was the duo of Sarah Potts and Vilines as they cruised to an 8-0 blanking of Akron’s Serafini and Ales.
The Musketeers return to the hard court on Sunday evening when they travel to Columbus for a showdown with the Ohio State Buckeyes.
