WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Xavier women's tennis team started off the 2012 USTA/ITA Regional Championships with two individuals competing for a chance to make the main draw, which begins Friday.

Senior Kally Alkire was one win shy of reaching the main draw while her teammate Andrea Wolf lost her opening match at the Basham Courts at the Schwartz Tennis Center on Purdue University's campus.

Alkire defeated (3-6, 7-6 (6-2), 6-3) Ball State's Kristel Sanders in a back-and-forth match. After losing the first set Alkire stormed back to win the second set on a tiebreaker and captured the final set. She then lost to Chattanooga's Jovana Pecovski in straight sets (6-4, 6-3) and was eliminated from the tournament.

Wolf lost her opening set to Purdue's Claudia Escribens, 7-6 (7-6), 6-2.

The doubles team of Wolf and sophomore Daniella Patton also lost. The duo dropped an 8-5 decision to Kelsey Coots and Katie Polk from Chattanooga.

Xavier returns to the court on Friday with Patton and freshman Alex Brinker taking part in the 64-player main draw. Patton plays Middle Tennessee State's Nayara Moraes at 1:15 p.m. and Brinker faces Vanderbilt's Marie Casares.
