Women's Tennis Enjoys Strong Showing at Miami Invitational

OXFORD, Ohio - The Xavier University women's tennis team turned in a strong showing at the Miami Invitational on Saturday and Sunday as the Musketeers recorded a 18-6 mark in singles action and a 8-4 record in doubles play for a combined record of 26-10 (.722) for the two-day event. Annie Diedalis, Jeanette Feider and Sarah Potts each went 3-0 in their respective singles this weekend.

Although no team scorers were kept, XU posted winning records against five of the seven teams competing at Miami (3-0 vs. Austin Peay, 5-1 vs. Cincinnati, 4-0 vs. Dayton, 1-4 vs. Indiana State, 4-4 vs. Miami, 3-0 vs. Morehead State and 6-1 vs. Wright State.

In singles action, Kristen Clary recorded a 1-2 mark on the weekend with the win coming over Morehead State's Yolanda Araujo, 6-3, 6-1. Jackie Vilines posted a 2-1 record with wins coming over Victoria Pulido of Miami 6-4, 6-3 and Cincinnati's Jenny Rowan 7-5, 6-3. Freshman Kara Courtney moved to 3-2 for her career with a pair of wins including a 6-3, 6-3 defeat of Dayton's Kate Mellion.

Diedalis was perfect on the weekend as the sophomore posted wins over Miami's Remy Swain 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (10), Lindsay Brown-Willeford of UC 6-3, 6-2 and Dayton's Megan Gray 6-2, 6-1. Alicia Papa recorded two wins including a 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (9) win over Brown-Willeford. Junior Kate Lohner improved to 4-1 on the season with a 2-1 mark including a dominating opening-round defeat of Wright State's Karina Presti 6-0, 6-1.



Potts cruised to a 3-0 mark on the weekend as the senior recorded straight-set defeats of Miami's Ashley Young 6-3, 6-3, UC's Madison Reasoner 6-1, 6-3 and Austin Peay's Alana Carere 6-3, 6-0. Feider was equally impressive as the freshman dropped just five games in two days en route to a 3-0 mark with wins over Monica Cappozziello of Wright State 6-0, 6-1, Jessica Morris of Wright State 6-1, 6-0 and Morehead State's M. Sammons 6-2, 6-1.

Xavier recorded an 8-4 mark in doubles action as the four teams each posted an identical 2-1 record on the weekend. Clary and Courtney teamed up for an impressive 8-5 defeat of Indiana State's Migan and Schickerling in the opening-round and also posted an 8-4 win over Dayton's Detroy and Metzger. Papa and Vilines opened with an 8-1 defeat of UC's Klauck and Young while also recording an 8-3 defeat of Morehead State's Ferreira and Weschenfelder.

Lohner and Potts teamed for wins over Miami's Scardina and Trauernicht 8-6 and Ames and Culbertson of Wright State 8-2. Diedalis and Feider picked up their third and fourth wins of the season as the two recorded victories over Wright State's Cappozzielle and Laux 8-0 and Austin Peay's Whelpley and Kruth 8-1.

Xavier will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 14, when the Musketeers travel to Chicago to participate in the three-day Chicago State Invitational.
