Brinker Picks Up Two Wins In Draw A Singles

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Xavier women's tennis team had an up-and-down first day at the Auto Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational, hosted by Michigan State. The Musketeers finished the day with a 6-8 record, with almost all of the matches coming in singles play. In singles, the Musketeers compiled a 5-7 record, as freshman Alex Brinker picked up a pair of wins in Draw A. Brinker cruised through her first-round opponent Nimisha Mohan, before toughing out a 7-6 (10-8), 6-1 win over Ball State's Anita Henestrosa. Also competing in singles Draw A was Daniella Patton, who dropped her first decision to Purdue in straight sets. However, she bounced back and won her consolation match over Toledo's Lexy Pitt, 6-4, 6-4. Draw B featured a pair of Musketeers in Andrea Wolf and Kally Alkire. Wolf fell in straight sets to Imogen Golder of Purdue, 6-4, 6-0, and Alkire lost a heartbreaker to host Michigan State, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5. Lizzie Oosterbaan and Allyson Westling both competed in singles Draw C. Oosterbaan was able to win her first set against Michigan State, 6-4, but dropped the next two to fall into the consolation bracket. Allyson Westling breezed by Mackenzie Bowman of Toledo in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Single Draw D featured lone-Musketeer Megan Morris, who dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Ball State, setting up a consolation match with rival Dayton.
In Draw E, Caitlin Lawless fell in three sets to Wisconsin's Pernilla Wohlstrom, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. Brooke Dennis, however, was able to win her match against Ball State in three sets, setting up a meeting with Toledo's Silvia Carvajal. Draw F featured senior Natalie Handler, who was defeated by Christina Brown of Michigan State in straight sets. The Musketeers finished the day 1-1 in doubles, with Kally Alkire and Alex Brinker pickin up an 8-5 win in Draw A. Allyson Westling and Daniella Patton competed in Draw B, but fell to Chrissy Coffman and Emily Mazzola of Toledo, 8-6. A third Musketeer doubles team, Brooke Dennis and Megan Morris have yet to play their first match in Draw C. The Musketeers will continue play in East Lansing tomorrow at 8 a.m. |
