Musketeers Open Fall Season at BGSU Invitational

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Xavier University women's tennis team opened up the fall season on Saturday in day one of the 2005 BGSU Invitational. XU posted a 10-4 record in singles and was 3-1 in doubles action. Kate Lohner, Alicia Papa and Sarah Potts each went undefeated in day one of the two-day event.
In flight No. 1, senior Kristen Clary posted a three-set win over Wright State's Tiffani Foster in the opening round 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 before being defeated by Toledo's Myriam Cueva in the semifinals 6-1, 7-5.
In flight No. 2, junior Jackie Vilines began play with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 defeat of BG's Jenna Nussbaum and then was defeated in three sets by Maggie Nenova of Buffalo 6-4, 0-6, 6-4, in the semifinals.
Senior Sarah Potts cruised to a 2-0 record in flight No. 3 with wins over Youngstown State's Emily Thayer 6-2, 6-3 and Toledo's Sarah Horning, 6-4, 6-2. Freshman Kara Courtney went 1-1 in flight No. 3 as she was defeated 6-1, 6-2 by Buffalo's Katrin Fischer and then went on to defeat Audra Beckett of Wright State 6-1, 6-1 in the back draw.
In flight No. 4, sophomore Annie Diedalis defeated Viviana Rivero of Toledo 6-3, 6-3 in the opener and was defeated 6-3, 6-7, 7-5 by Jenna O'Dell of Ferris State in her second match of the day. Jeanette Feider posted a 1-1 mark in flight No. 5 as her first-round opponent, Allison Day, retired in the first set. Feider was then defeated 6-1, 6-1 by Stefanie Menoff of Bowling Green in the semifinals.
In flight No. 6, Alicia Papa went undefeated as she defeated Bowling Green's Kelsey Jakupcin 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals and posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Claire Smalley of Toledo in the semifinals. Kate Lohner also was perfect on the day as the junior defeated Toledo's Daniella Moran 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinals following her quarterfinal bye.
On the doubles side, Clary and Courtney were defeated 8-6 by Toledo's Cueva and Paravicini in the top of the flight No. 1 bracket. On the bottom part of the bracket in flight No. 1, Papa and Vilines posted an 8-5 defeat of Youngstown State's Peretti and Day.
In doubles flight No. 2, Kate Lohner and Sarah Potts were victorious in their opener as they defeated Wright State's Culbertson and Ames 8-6. Diedalis and Feider teamed up in flight No. 3 for an 8-1 win over Lanc and Hively of Youngstown State.
The Musketeers will return to the courts on Sunday, Sept. 25, for the completion of the 2005 BGSU Invitational.
