BOWLING GREEN, Ohio- The Xavier Musketeers women’s tennis team had a successful opening day at the Bowling Green Invitational. The combined record from all competition was 12-5, including a 9-4 mark in singles play.
The invitational was broken up into seven singles flights and four doubles flights, with Musketeers entering a competitor into all of them.
Freshman Alexandra Brinker and junior Andrea Wolf were both able to advance to the finals of their respected flights. Brinker defeated Anita Henestrosa of IPFW in straight sets, before handling Lexy Pitt of Toledo 7-6 (7-1), 6-0. Wolf, competing in the third flight, defeated Judy Li of Duquesne 6-4, 6-3, and then won a hard fought match over Chrissy Coffman of Toledo 6-3, 4-6, 10-2.
A trio of Xavier players dropped their first matches of the day, but were able to bounce back in the consolation rounds. Sophomore Daniella Patton fell to Ashleigh Witte of Cincinnati, but came back strong to defeat Ana Rajkovic of Miami (OH).
Fellow sophomore Lizzie Oosterbaan had perhaps the most taxing day of any Musketeer, playing a pair of three set matches. In her opener, she dropped a 3-6, 6-4, 10-5 decision to Ellen Folkers of Cleveland State. However, she was able to pick up a victory in the consolation bracket, beating Cincinnati’s Kelly Poggensee-Wei 4-6, 6-4, 10-2.
Junior Ally Westling fell to Katie Grubb of Bowling Green in three sets, but came back to nearly shut out Paula Gruber of Duquesne 6-2, 6-0.
In the fourth singles flight, Kally Alkire was able to win her opener over Laurence Lambert of Duquesne. However, she would falter in her second round match, losing to Kara Sherwood of Cleveland State, 6-4, 6-3.
Freshman Megan Morris, playing in the seventh flight, was the only Musketeer to play just one match on the day. She defeated Emily Mazzola of Toledo 6-0, 7-5, setting up a semifinal matchup with Sierra Sullivan of Cincinnati on Saturday.
Each of the four doubles teams played just one match on Friday, combining for a 3-1 record. Alkire and Katie Pleiman competed in the first flight, rolling over Cleveland State 8-0. In the second flight, Wolf and Patton fell to IPFW 8-2, setting up a consolation match with rival Cincinnati.
In the third flight, Westling and Oosterbaan defeated Toledo by the score of 8-3. They will square off against IPFW tomorrow. In the fourth flight, Brooke Dennis and Megan Morris blew past Duquesne 8-5, setting up a semifinal match with Toledo.
The Musketeers hope to continue their success as they wrap up the Bowling Green Invitational on Saturday.
