FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. - The Xavier University women's tennis team took down Marquette after six hours of play, 4-3. Alex Brinker and Daniella Patton played three and a half and four hour matches to capture key points in Saturday's victory. The team competes in the finals of the BIG EAST Women's Tennis Championship presented by New York Life Sunday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis center. First serve set for 9 a.m.
In doubles competition Marquette came out swinging grabbing the first point of the match. Allyson Westling and Andrea Wolf dropped their match, 8-0, to Ali Dawson and Laia Hernandez Soler, while Cristina Di Lorenzo and Patton lost to Rocio Diaz and Erin Gebes, 8-3.
Andrea Wolf did not let the excitement of the match get to her and she tied the match, 2-2, with her victory over L. Hernandez Soler, 6-2, 6-3.
Brinker battled Gebes for three and a half hours and relentlessly pulled out the victory. Brinker lost her first set, 4-6, but battled after being down 5-0. She was down again, 5-2, in the second set, but played fearlessly to pull out the set victory after being down multiple match points, 7-6 (7). The third set was nothing short of exciting, Brinker was down two games and managed to fiercely crawl back and win the match, 7-5. Brinker's victory gave Xavier their first lead of the match, 3-2.
Juniors Lizzie Oosterbaan and Patton were the last two left to battle for the final point. Oosterbaan lost the first set, 6-4, to A. Hernandez Soler and gave it her all in the second to force it into a tiebreak. Hernandez Soler came out on top, 7-6 (3), sending the match into a, 3-3, tie.
Patton competed in a four hour match to seal the deal for Xavier. In the first set, Patton had two set points, but Vanessa Foltinger beat her, 6-7 (9). The length of the game was wearing on the girls forcing Foltinger to take an injury timeout early in the second set. Patton stayed strong being down, 4-0, in the second set and closed out the match, 6-4, 6-0.
