CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Xavier women's tennis team fell on Sunday in the Atlantic 10 Championship to the VCU Rams by a score of 4-0.

The Musketeers, who had won the doubles point in their first three matches of the tournament, dropped it against VCU. Seniors Kally Alkire and Katie Pleiman fell 8-4, in a match that was much closer than the score indicates.

Shortly after Alkire and Pleiman finished, Alex Brinker and Andrea Wolf were defeated 8-2, giving the doubles point to VCU and forcing the Musketeers to win four of the six singles matches if they wanted to be crowned champions of the Atlantic 10.

However, the Musketeers quickly found themselves in a 3-0 hole, as Alkire and Wolf dropped their singles matches in straight sets.

The remaining four singles matches were tightly contested throughout. Pleiman and sophomore Lizzie Oosterbaan won the first sets of their respective matches, while Daniella Patton and Brinker lost close first sets. Ultimately, Brinker would wind up losing her match 6-3, 6-4.

Xavier, playing in its first Atlantic 10 title match since 2008, had no reason to hang its head, as it played a nationally-ranked VCU team tough from start to finish. "Today was not the result we wanted obviously, but we can accept that because our play was really good today," Head Coach Eric Toth remarked. "We left our best tennis out on the court this week and that's how you want it to be in a conference championship."

Toth, despite the disappointing finish, was excited for the future of Musketeer women's tennis, saying, "I'm really sad to see this group of seniors go, but that being said, we have a great group of players coming back next year and I expect to be contending for a Big East championship."

The Musketeers finish the season with an overall record of 20-6, which includes a 10-1 record in the Atlantic 10.
