MONROEVILLE, Pa. - The third-seeded Xavier University women's tennis team opened play at the 2006 Atlantic 10 Conference Women's Tennis Championships with a 4-0 win over St. Bonaventure on Friday afternoon at the Club 4 Life. XU improves to 13-8 with the win and will take on No. 6 seed George Washington in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 8:00 a.m.
Xavier took control early in the match with wins at second and third doubles to record the first point. Annie Diedalis and Jackie Vilines cruised to an 8-0 win over Ana Martorell and Katy Riley at No. 3 for XU's first doubles win. At No. 2, Jeanette Feider and Kate Lohner clinched the doubles point as the duo notched an 8-3 defeat of Anna Perevenzetseva and Stephanie Fosnight. Kristen Clary and Kara Courtney were leading Yolanda Callaghan and Ana Delgado, 6-4, at No. 1 when the match was called.
XU carried its momentum into singles play where the Musketeers posted three wins in under one hour to record the win over the Bonnies. Senior Sarah Potts gave Xavier the 2-0 lead as she did not drop a game to Katy Riley at No. 6. Potts improves to 24-5 on the season including a 14-4 mark in the sixth position.
At No. 3, Vilines rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Anna Martorell for Xavier's third point of the match. Senior Emily Tuchscherer sealed the match at No. 5 with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Delgado. Xavier was also leading at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 when the match was ended.
