CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Xavier Musketeer women's tennis team advanced to the Atlantic 10 Championship for the first time since 2008, defeating Massachusetts 4-0.

The doubles competition began well for the Musketeers, as the No. 3 team of Alex Brinker and Andrea Wolf won 8-5. But, shortly after they finished, the No. 2 team of sophomore Daniella Patton and junior Ally Westling fell in a close one 8-6.

So, in a replay of the quarterfinal match the day before against Fordham, the all-important doubles point again came down to senior tandem Kally Alkire and Katie Pleiman. Once again, the two proved clutch, winning an 8-6 nail biter to give the Musketeers the doubles point, something they could not do in their match with UMass earlier in the season.

The Musketeers dominated singles play, led by sophomore Lizzie Oosterbaan and Brinker. Brinker, competing at the No. 2 spot, disposed of her opponent quickly, winning 6-2, 6-3. Oosterbaan finished just minutes later, wrapping up a 6-1, 6-1 victory.

With the Musketeers needing only one more win to clinch the match, Pleiman stepped up and finished off her opponent, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2. Pleiman, who has played in the top singles spot all four years of her career, was happy to finally be in the finals of the Atlantic 10 tournament. "It's really exciting because we've worked so hard all season and everyone has contributed," Pleiman said. "But, we aren't satisfied because we have another match tomorrow that we need to win."

Head Coach Eric Toth echoed the thoughts of Pleiman, saying, "It's been a total team effort throughout this tournament and we're very excited to be playing for a championship tomorrow." "Getting that doubles point was huge for us, and all six girls went out and got off to a great start in singles, which put a lot of pressure on UMass. I can't say enough about how dependable this group has been. It was a team effort top to bottom."

The Musketeers will look to earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament tomorrow when they take on Virginia Commonwealth at 10 a.m. Xavier has not played VCU this season.
