Xavier Stays Unbeaten In A-10 With Win Over Rhody
April 6, 2013
BRONX, N.Y. - Xavier played another sharp match against Rhode Island on Saturday to win their eighth-consecutive Atlantic 10 contest. The Musketeers downed the Rams, 5-2, at the Hawthron/Rooney Courts.
"I felt we played well today and closer to a level we played at earlier in the year when we were probably playing a little better," head coach Eric Toth said. "We needed to play well as Rhode Island has a good team and a lackluster effort today would have made things difficult. We have a busy week coming up with three matches on the schedule so we need a great effort out of everyone to finish the regular season strong and give us confidence going into the A-10 tournament. "
The continuation of freshman Alex Brinker's winning streak was the highlight of the victory for the Musketeers. She has now won 17 matches in a row and won on Saturday with two straight 6-2 sets.
Xavier also netted three victories in the doubles action with Patton and Allyson Westling going into a lengthy match against their competition.
The Musketeers will celebrate their three seniors on Tuesday when they host Wright State beginning at 1 p.m. Kally Alkire, Katie Pleiman and Natalie Handler will be playing in their final home matches for Xavier. Northern Kentucky and St. Bonaventure are also on the schedule next week for Xavier.
