XU Tennis Falls To GW, 4-3, In A Near Four-Hour Match

WASHINGTON - The Xavier women's tennis team fell to George Washington, 4-3, in a near four-hour match Friday afternoon at the GW Tennis Center.
The team was able to grab the doubles point to go ahead of the Colonials, 1-0. Cristina Di Lorenzo and Daniella Patton defeated Grace Egger and Lana Robins, 8-2, while seniors Allyson Westling and Andrea Wolf beat Leah Pascarella and Stephanie Wei, 8-6. With a quick grab of two victories, Alex Brinker and Sydney Liggins were left to an unfinished status while being tied with Isabella Escobar and Taylor Nederlander, 5-5.
Singles competition started off strong with two victories from Patton and Di Lorenzo allowing the Musketeers to have a substantial, 3-0, lead over George Washington. Patton defeated Escobar, 6-4, 6-2, and Di Lorenzo defeated Nederlander, 6-2, 2-6,6-2.
GW would not go down without a fight winning the next four singles matches to take the dual from XU. Brinker fell to Pascarella, 6-2, 7-5, and shortly after Wolf did the same to Grace Egger, 7-5, 6-4. In a close match, Liggins could not top Lana Robins, 7-5, 7-6 (1).
Being tied at 3-3 the match came down to the No. 6 singles match. Lizzie Oosterbann faced Christina Carpenter in a heated match. Carpenter took the first set, 6-2. Oosterbaan snatched the second set, 7-5. Coming down to the tiebreak, Carpenter came out on top, 6-3.
"We competed well today, but as a team we just did not execute well enough to beat GW today," said assistant coach Doug Matthews "I am thrilled we have another match tomorrow against UMBC to try to get things moving back in the right direction."
Xavier plays the second match of their road trip Saturday, April 5 at UMBC. The match is set to begin at 11 a.m.
