Upperclassmen Lead Women's Tennis to 4-3 Win over Duquesne
March 28, 2009
CINCINNATI, Ohio - Winning its eighth dual meet decided by one point this spring, the Xaiver women's tennis team defeated Duquesne, 4-3, on Saturday. With the score tied at 3-3, junior Kaitlyn Zinn won her Flight 6 singles match in straight sets to secure the win for the Musketeers.
"Duquesne gave us all we could handle," XU head coach Eric Toth said. "They are a very good team and are going to be a force to be reckoned with come April. We were very fortunate to win.
"Our girls battled back, fought, and they clawed. Like I said earlier in the week, this team has a tremendous amount of fight. When they step onto the singles court, no matter the result in doubles, they have a tremendous amount of confidence."
The Musketeers fell into an early deficit, losing two of three matches to secede the doubles point to the Dukes. Juniors Jill Ducro and Aylin Seyalioglu won the Flight 3 doubles match over Duquesne's Tara Majdalani and Stephanie Novakowski to help Xu avoid the sweep.
Upperclassmen led the comeback for the Musketeers, earning all three of the team's singles victories. Senior Kara Courtney evened the dual meet with a decisive win in her Flight 1 singles match, besting the Dukes' Zena Williams in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
After Duquesne claimed the Flight 2 match, senior Jeanette Fieder once again pulled XU even with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Alexandria Albano in the Flight 5 showdown, making it a 2-2 meet.
The Dukes moved one point away from clinching the team victory with a win in Flight 3 singles action, but Ducro fought back to win her Flight 4 match and even the match once more. After dropping the first set, 6-3, Ducro pulled out a 6-4 win in the second set to even the match. The decisive third set with Duquesne's Samantha Noble came down a tiebreaker, which Ducro won 7-2 to tie the meet at 3-3.
With all eyes on the Flight 6 match between XU's Zinn and the Dukes' Majdalani, Zinn rose to the occasion, winning in straight sets (6-1, 6-3) to secure a team victory for the Musketeers.
XU will be in action again tomorrow when it takes on Dayton at 10 a.m. on the road.
