Courtney Leads Women's Tennis Past Phoenix, 6-1

GREEN BAY, Wis. - Sophomore Kara Courtney posted wins in both singles and doubles action Sunday, leading the Xavier women's tennis team past Wisconsin-Green Bay, 6-1, at the Western Racquet Club in Green Bay. The Musketeers, who return home Wednesday to host Cincinnati, have won two straight and improved to 5-2 this spring.
Courtney, who went undefeated in both singles and doubles this weekend, posted a No. 2 singles victory over UWGB's Jennifer Tan in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. The sophomore teamed with senior Jackie Vilines to grab a win in No. 1 doubles over Tan and Heather Harding by an 8-2 count. After winning her first set, Vilines was tripped up in her No. 1 singles match by Harding 6-7, 6-2, 10-4.
Xavier saw wins come its way in the second through sixth singles positions all in straight sets. Jill Ducro won her No. 3 singles match over Aschley Jurgella by scores of 6-4 and 6-3. Jeanette Feider downed Laura Bartingale (6-1, 6-4), Kaitlyn Zinn ousted Lauryn Grimando (6-0, 6-1) and Alicia Papa blanked Amy Messiner (6-0, 6-0).
XU swept the doubles action, led by the Courney/Viline pairing. In No. 2 doubles, Ducro and Annie Diedalis rolled over Jurgella and Bartingale, 8-3. Feider and Kate Lohner beat Grimando and Messiner by an 8-6 score.
The Musketeers return to action Wednesday, hosting crosstown rival Cincinnati at 1 p.m.
