Feb. 14, 2010
Monroeville, Pa. – The Xavier women’s tennis team won its fourth straight match and improved to 3-0 in the Atlantic 10 Conference with a 5-2 win over Duquesne Saturday in Pittsburgh.
"I couldn't be happier how we have played in conference in the early part of the season. Duquesne will get better as the year goes on and will be a tough out for anyone come tournament time,” said Xavier head coach Eric Toth. “We competed again very well tonight. Kelsey Kinnard was very impressive tonight in singles , as was Katie Pleiman. Kaitlyn Zinn and Kally Alkire did a really good job battling through the tough moments of their matches to earn victories.”
Katie Pleiman defeated Ana Mungo 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. Kinnard earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6, and Alkire and Zinn earned wins at No. 4 and No. 5 to seal the XU win.
Doubles proved crucial as the Musketeers earned wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take the doubles point.
“Christie Pleiman and Katie Pleiman were dominant at three doubles and continue to play great together” said Toth. “It is great to get on a little bit of a roll after our tough start. I was confident that our season would start to turn for the better. I 'm happy our girls have remained positive, continued to work hard weekly in practice, and have competed well to earn this current four match win streak."
Xavier improved to 4-5 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the A-10 with the win. The Musketeers will look to continue their winning streak as they travel to Morehead State for a non-conference matchup Wednesday, February 17.
