Women's Tennis Falls to Miami (Ohio), 6-1, on the Road
Feb. 14, 2009
HAMILTON, Ohio - Junior Jill Ducro improved to 4-1 in dual meet action this spring, but it wasn't enough for the Xavier University women's tennis team, which fell to Miami (Ohio) by the score of 6-1 on Saturday. Ducro improved her singles mark to 8-4 for the 2008-09 season, with a 4-1 mark in Flight 6 action. "It's the early stages of the season, but it's apparent to me that Miami (Ohio) is certainly an NCAA Tournament caliber team," XU head coach Eric Toth said. "They were just a little too much for us tonight." Taking on the RedHawks' Cara Wald, Ducro jumped out to the early lead with a 6-2 victory in the first set. Although Wald challenged in set number two, Ducro held on for the 7-5 win to earn the Musketeers' lone point. Although the score was one-sided, Toth was pleased with the perseverance of his squad, which holds a 4-3 record in dual meets this spring, against Miami. "I thought our effort was just outstanding," he said. "Every match, these girls fight and compete, and they give us a chance to win. But give credit to Miami because they were the better team today." XU won't have to wait long for a chance to rebound, with a 9:30 a.m. showdown with Rutgers on the docket for Sunday. Toth believes his team will be ready. "I think the Miami match will really help us prepare to play a good Rutgers team tomorrow," he said.
