CLEVELAND, OHIO – The Xavier women’s tennis had a 1-0 lead heading into singles play but was unable to hold on as Cleveland State defeated the Musketeers 4-3 Friday night. Xavier falls to 2-3 on the season.
Juniors Katie Pleiman and Kally Alkire defeated Maria Lazaris and Catrine Bjerrehus 8-4 in the No.1 doubles match. In the No. 2 doubles match sophomore Allyson Westling and freshman Daniella Patton downed Alex Power and Alexandra Bush 9-7.
Xavier won the No.1 and No. 2 single matches with Pleiman defeating Lazaris 6-1, 6-4 and Patton winning 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 over Bjerrehus.
"Congratulations to Cleveland State's girls tonight. They won more crucial points and in the end that was the difference. Hopefully we can learn from this and bounce back strong against Youngstown State tomorrow." said assistant coach Doug Matthews.
The Musketeers return to action tomorrow February 11 at Youngstown State. The first serve is set for 5 p.m.
