PHILADELPHIA – The Xavier women’s tennis team earned its first win and first conference win of the dual match season Friday as the Musketeers blanked Saint Joseph’s 7-0. XU senior Jill Ducro posted a dominating 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles.
"It was nice not only to get our first win tonight, but also our first conference win. I'm really happy with tonight's performance,” said Xavier head coach Eric Toth. “I truly feel we have played well up to this point and just simply have not closed a couple of teams we have previously played out. Our girls are really looking forward to playing Temple tomorrow. They have certainly had our number the last couple of seasons and are always among the A 10's best. This year is no exception. We expect a really tough battle tomorrow where we need to compete at our absolute best to be victorious."
Xavier swept all matches with Tifanie Treece earning a hard-fought 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles. Freshman Katie Pleiman earned a 6-1, 6-2 win in the No. 1 match, Kally Alkire defeated Nicole Esposito 6-3, 7-5 at No. 4, and Kaitlyn Zinn earned a victory at No. 5.
Xavier improved to 1-5 overall and 1-0 in the Atlantic 10. Xavier remains in Philadelphia to face Temple Sunday.
