Feb. 1, 2014
CINCINNATI - Xavier women's tennis obtains its first victory of the season with a 5-2 win over Abilene Christian Saturday night at Eastern Hills Indoor Tennis Club.
Xavier doubles took care of business in true Musketeer fashion. After dropping the first match, seniors Andrea Wolf and Allyson Westling defeated Nada Marjanovic and Emily Conrad, 6-3. Daniella Patton and Cristina Di Lorenzo followed the seniors' example by beating Brittney Reed and Erin Walker, 6-4.
"The doubles point was huge for us tonight. ACU really played good, aggressive doubles, so for us to get two out of three matches was great. We came out in singles and gave a complete effort," said assistant coach Doug Matthews.
In singles, Sydney Liggins defeated Erin Welker, 6-2, 6-0, to give Xavier its first singles win of the day. Junior Lizzie Oosterbaan defeated Ansley Boarman, 6-1, 1-5, followed by Di Lorenzo beating Brittney Reed, 3-6, 6-3, 10-3, allowing XU to pull away from ACU, 3-1, in singles competition. Singles completion wrapped up with Alex Brinker winning her match over Micah Hermsdorf, 6-4, 4-6, 10-8.
Xavier improves their record to 1-2 with the win over Abilene Christian. Next match for the team is Friday, Feb. 7, 2014 against Eastern Kentucky at 7 p.m. The match will take place at Eastern Hills Indoor Tennis Club.
