NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Xavier women's tennis team continued its opening weekend of the season on Saturday at No. 22 Notre Dame where the Musketeers dropped a 7-0 decision to the nationally-ranked Fighting Irish. XU evens its season record at 1-1 with the loss while ND improves to 2-0 overall.
The Fighting Irish established themselves early in the match with three convincing wins in doubles play. At No. 1, XU's Kristen Clary and Kara Courtney were defeated 8-3 by the nation's 35th-ranked team of Brook Buck and Kelcy Tefft. In the second position, Alicia Papa and Jackie Vilines dropped an 8-1 decision to the 45th-ranked duo of Lauren Connelly and Kristina Stastny. At No. 3, Kate Lohner and Sarah Potts were defeated 8-1 by Kelly Nelson and Katie Potts.
At No. 1 singles, Clary was defeated 6-0, 6-0, by No. 24 Catrina Thompson. Vilines dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision to No. 44 Christian Thompson at the second position. In the third slot, Courtney fell in straight sets to Stastny, 6-2, 6-2. At No. 4, Papa was blanked by Katie Potts, 6-0, 6-0. Annie Diedalis fell 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 to Lauren Connelly and XU's Sarah Potts was defeated by Nelson at No. 6, 6-3, 6-3.
The Musketeers will look to get back in the win column when XU returns to the court Friday, Feb. 3, at Youngstown State.
