Jan. 26, 2014
HAMILTON, Ohio - Xavier's women's tennis team fell short on the road after six hours of play to Miami (Ohio), 4-3. The teams were tied at 3-3 going into the final singles match of the day, but Miami came out on top of this dual match.
"An incredible college tennis match," said head coach Eric Toth. "Both teams fought close for close to six hours and should be applauded for their efforts tonight. Congratulations to Miami (Ohio) on earning a hard fought victory. Our girls have nothing to be upset about. Our fortune will turn quickly if we continue to compete to the level we did tonight."
Andrea Wolf started the evening off strong giving the Musketeers their first singles victory of the day at the No. 5 spot defeating Ramona Costea in two sets, 6-2, 6-3. Miami went on to win the next three matches of singles competition at the second, third and fourth spots. Alex Brinker gave Xavier another singles victory defeating Christine Raymond in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
In doubles competition, Miami took the first match. Brinker and Sydney Liggins and Cristina Di Lorenzo and Daniella Patton were able to come out victorious over Miami in their matches in true Musketeer fashion, 8-1 and 8-5, respectively.
Being tied 3-3, the dual match came down to the No. 6 singles match between Xavier's Lizzie Oosterbaan and Miami's Ana Rajkovic. In a tight match, Oosterbaan was able to take the first set from Rajkovic, 6-7(4), but Rajkovic was able to squeeze out the next two sets, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (9), to take the match and the dual victory for Miami.
