RICHMOND, Ky. - The Xavier women's tennis team won the early doubles point and earned a challenging 4-3 victory over Eastern Kentucky on Friday at the Greg Adams Indoor Tennis Center.

The match came down to two final courts and junior Andrea Wolf picking up a straight-set victory at the No. 5 singles position that clinched the first road win of the year for the Musketeers (2-1).

"Tonight was a very good early season win for us," head coach Eric Toth said. "Eastern Kentucky is a very good team that is especially difficult to beat at their place. Winning a tough match like this will give us nothing but added confidence as we move forward in our young season."

Wolf's decisive win (6-3, 6-2) over Marcela Jimenez was the third singles victory of the match for Xavier. Also winning their battles was senior Katie Pleiman at the top spot and freshman Alex Brinker at No. 2 singles.

Both made quick work of their opponents with Pleiman sweeping (6-4, 6-2) Amandie Faouzi and Brinker handling (6-1, 6-1) Kristina Labeja. Both players have 2-1 dual match records this season.

Xavier's No. 3 and 4 singles players both lost their matches after winning the opening set. Senior Kally Alkire won the opening set on a tiebreaker but couldn't hang on against Melissa Gerritsen. Sophomore Daniella Patton squeaked out an opening set win but eventually fell to Saioa Oscoz. Also losing her match was Lizzie Oosterbaan at the No. 6 singles position.

The Musketeers' victories at the No. 1 and 3 doubles positions were the difference in the match and were the first doubles point earned this season. Alkire and Pleiman knocked off (8-1) Labeja and Oscoz at the top position and Patton and Wolf defeated (8-5) Jimenez and Poffo at the third spot.

Brinker and Westling were upended by Faouzi and Gerritsen.

Xavier has the remainder of the weekend off and will play local foes Dayton and Miami (Ohio) next weekend. The Friday night match against Dayton marks the opening of Atlantic 10 play for the Musketeers.
