CINCINNATI - The Xavier women's tennis team swept the doubles competition, but Bowling Green was able to rally during the singles competition to defeat the Musketeers 4-3 Sunday afternoon at the Mercy Healthplex Fairfield.
"Today was a difficult loss for our girls. We competed exceptionally well and did everything but win the match. You have to give Bowling Green a lot of credit for battling back after losing three first sets in singles to come back and win the match," said XU coach Eric Toth. "The season is young and we will certainly be in the same situation again. Simply stated, we need to learn from this and perform better when in the same situation next time."
XU came out hot in the doubles competition. Tifanie Treece and Kelsey Kinnard defeated Christine Chiricosta and Maddy Eccelston 8-6 in the No. 1 match. In the No. 2 match Kally Alkire and Jill Ducro posted an 8-4 win over Katia Babina and Jade Johnson. And at No. 3 doubles Christie and Katie Pleiman improved to 2-1 as a team with an 8-2 win over Jessica Easdale and Samantha Kintzel.
However the singles point proved decisive as the Musketeers managed only two singles wins. Katie Pleiman pulled off a 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Chiricosta in the No. 1 match. Kinnard posted the second singles win for XU when she defeated Johnson 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 4 match.
Ducro fell to Kintzel in three sets 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, in the third match, and Kaitlyn Zinn fell in three sets, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1, to Eccelston in the fourth match.
With the loss the Muskteers fall to 0-3 on the season. XU will travel to Toledo for its next match on January 30.
