HAMILTON, Ohio – The Xavier women’s tennis team fought hard but it was not enough as the Musketeers fell to the No. 70 ranked Miami Redhawks 6-1 Friday in Hamilton, Ohio.

"We just didn't do all that you need to do to beat a good team like Miami,” said XU head coach Eric Toth. “Courts two and three doubles played very well, but in the end it wasn't enough to capture the doubles point. In singles, Miami plays very solidly and absolutely will not beat themselves.”

In doubles play the duo of Christie Plieman and Katie Pleiman posted an 8-6 win over Riekie Honiball and Cara Wald in the court three match. In the No. 2 match Kally Alkire and Jill Ducro fought hard but fell to Anastasia Dracheva and Brintney Larson by a 9-7 decision.

In singles play Katie Pleiman posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over Dracheva in the No. 1 match. In the No. 3 singles match Ducro took Megan Martzolf to the wire but fell 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6).

“We just did not make enough balls on enough courts to make it as competitive as it could have been. It is early and we will improve. Our girls really make an effort to get better each day at practice. We just need it to translate better into our match play. Bowling Green will provide quite a test for us Sunday and we will have to compete at our absolute best to win."

With the loss, the Musketeers fall to 0-2 on the season while Miami improves to 1-0. Xavier will face Bowling Green at the Mercy Healthplex Fairfield on Sunday. First serve is set for noon.
