LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Playing for the second time of the season the Xavier women's tennis team was defeated by Louisville in a 7-0 decision on Sunday at the Bass Rudd Tennis Center.

It was the first loss of the young season for the Musketeers (1-1) who opened up the weekend with a decisive victory over Detroit at home.

"We competed well on every court and were close to taking a match or two," head coach Eric Toth said. "Louisville has a lot of familiar faces in their lineup that have experience. They are a very good team that was simply better than us today. We'll get back to working hard this week to get ready for a tough Eastern Kentucky team on Friday."

Junior Andrea Wolf had the longest battle of the day for Xavier as she and the Cardinals' Stefanie Villajuan went three sets. The Cincinnati native eventual lost the No. 5 singles match in a third-set tiebreak (6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8)).

Also playing into the third set was senior Katie Pleiman who lost her contest with Julia Fellerhoff. Pleiman won the first set over the 84th ranked player in the nation, but could not hold on as she eventually lost (2-6, 6-2, 6-1).

All other singles matches went against the Musketeers with freshman Alex Brinker falling (6-1, 6-4) at No. 2 singles to 62nd-ranked Rebecca Shine, sophomore Daniella Patton being beat by Manuela Velasquez (6-3, 6-0) in No. 3 singles, senior Kally Alkire dropping (6-3, 6-1) her No. 4 singles contest to Mandy Brown and sophomore Lizzie Oosterbaan losing (6-3, 6-0) at No. 6 singles to Becky Bodine.

Xavier dropped all three doubles matches to Louisville to begin the match. The No. 2 doubles match was the tightest contest with Brinker and junior Ally Westling narrowly losing (8-5) to Bodine and Shine.

Pleiman and Alkire lost (8-3) to Velasquez and Fellerhoff at No. 1 doubles and Patton and Wolf were defeated (8-1) by Brown and Villajuan at the third doubles spot.

The Musketeers remain away from Cincinnati as they visit Richmond, Ky. for a match at 4 p.m. on Friday against Eastern Kentucky. It is the only match next week for Xavier.
