Jan. 9, 2009
BOCA RATON, Fla. – A sweep in doubles action propelled the Xavier University women’s tennis team to a 4-3 victory over Florida Atlantic to open the dual meet season for the Musketeers. Senior Kara Courtney picked up wins in first singles and doubles, while sophomore Kelsey Kinnard and junior Kaitlyn Zinn also picked up a pair of victories in the win.
“We really worked hard on our doubles this week and it was the difference in the match today,” head coach Eric Toth said. “Florida Atlantic has a nice team and it was a great start to what we hope is a successful season.”
Courtney teamed up with fellow senior Jeanette Feider to defeat Dominique Wimmer and Natalia Totevska, 8-5, in the No. 1 doubles match up. Kinnard and sophomore Tifanie Treece helped lock up the doubles point with a win in the second slot, and XU completed the sweep with a victory from senior Catherine Starr and Zinn in the third doubles match.
Holding a 1-0 lead after securing the doubles point, the Musketeers won three of the six singles matches to claim victory. Courtney defeated Florida Atlantic’s Erika Mrazkova in the top singles match up in straight sets (6-3, 7-5) to going 2-0 on the day.
