Xavier Women’s Soccer Team Completes Sweep of Atlantic 10 Weekend

CINCINNATI, OH --- The Xavier University women's soccer team captured an exciting 2-1 come-from-behind win over Atlantic 10 Conference rival George Washington today at Xavier’s Corcoran Field.

The two teams battled to a scoreless tie through the first 44+ minutes of action but George Washington broke the deadlock with a goal at the 44:27 mark. GW senior Kesha Christoph drilled a long shot from 35 yards out, placing the ball just between the crossbar and the outstretched arms of a XU senior goalkeeper Megan Veith (Cincinnati/St. Ursula).

Xavier couldn’t find the back of the net through the first 79 minutes of the match, although the Musketeers had several good chances. The luck changed for XU at the 79:08 mark when freshman Jessica Robb (Cincinnati/Seton) punched the ball into the left side of the goal off a well placed corner kick from junior Lindsay Yonadi (Boca Raton, Fl/Spanish River).

The Musketeers wasted little time in getting what proved to be the game-winning goal. Junior Tracy Veith (Cincinnati/St. Ursula) kicked a ball toward the goal from inside the box that sophomore teammate Melissa Clavier (Cincinnati/Mother of Mercy) finished off and kicked into the net at the 82:48 mark.

Xavier, which had won Friday over previously unbeaten A-10 foe Richmond, went to 2-3 in the Atlantic 10 and 6-7 overall, while George Washington fell to 2-3 in the league and 5-7 overall.

XU outshot GW 15-8, including an 8-7 advantage in shots on goal.

The Musketeers are back in action for another key Atlantic 10 weekend on Friday at Fordham and next Sunday at La Salle.
