Women's Soccer Hosts UMass, Rhode Island This Weekend

CINCINNATI -- The Xavier women's soccer team will close out the longest homestand of the season this weekend as the Musketeers host Atlantic 10 rivals Massachusetts on Friday, October 8, and Rhode Island on Sunday, October 10. Friday's kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and Sunday's game begins at 1 p.m. at the XU Soccer Complex.
"This weekend presents another Friday-Sunday challenge for us," said XU head coach Woody Sherwood. "We really need to commit to playing the kind of soccer which has led to our success this season. We have had a good week of training and are prepared for two tough games."
Xavier (5-6-0, 1-1-0 A-10) split its first two Atlantic 10 games last weekend. The Musketeers downed La Salle in their conference opener, 4-1, on Friday, October 1, and fell to Fordham, 1-0, on Sunday, October 3. The Musketeers were led by freshman Lauren Heap in the win over La Salle. The Highlands Ranch, Colo., native earned two goals in the win over the Explorers. Fellow freshman Mariah Whitaker and junior Jessica Brooks also earned a goal in the match.
Brooks and Heap lead the Musketeers with five goals each this season. As a team, the Musketeers have posted 15 goals on the season.
In goal, senior Jenny Rosen has seen more time in recent games. Jennifer Perri has started every match in the goal but she was able to get some much-needed rest in the second half of both the La Salle and Fordham games. Rosen earned four saves in 90 minutes of work this past weekend.
Sophomore Leslie Boersma has been having a strong season thus far. The Lakewood, Colo,. native has earned four assists during the 2010 campaign, which ranks 75th in the nation.
The Minutewomen (4-7-0, 1-1-0 A-10) are coming off a 1-0 win over Saint Louis last Sunday. Like the Musketeers, UMass split its first two A-10 games with a 2-0 loss to Charlotte and the aforementioned win over the Billikens last weekend.
UMass hasn't been lacking in offense this season with 18 total goals and seven players with at least one score. Deanna Colarossi leads the Minutewomen with five goals and Therese Smith is second on the team with four.
The Minutewomen have been known to win big this season. UMass has won two games by a 4-0 count and have scored more than one goal in five games this year.
Emily Cota has spent the majority of minutes in the goal for the Minutewomen. So far, she has earned 41 saves and holds a 3-6-0 record.
URI (1-8-1, 1-1-0 A-10) is coming off of a 1-0 loss to Atlantic 10 foe Charlotte on October 3. The Rams opened A-10 play on October 1 with a 1-0 victory over Saint Louis.
Offensively, Rhode Island has earned seven total goals with Kaylen Shimona leading the way with a trio of goals.
Sasha Reiber has been the Rams' iron-woman in the goal box. The junior goalkeeper has started every match and has totaled 920 minutes this season.
URI will face league-leader Dayton on Friday before facing XU on Sunday at 1 p.m.
