CINCINNATI --- The Xavier Musketeer women's soccer team opens a two-match homestand with local rival Northern Kentucky on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. at the Xavier Soccer Complex. Xavier, 5-1-1, suffered its first defeat of the season at Indiana on Wednesday, 3-0. The match was much closer than the final score, though, as XU trailed 1-0 after over 68 minutes of action and had multiple chances to tie the score before IU got an insurance goal in the 69th minute.
Northern Kentucky, 4-3-1, is coming off a 3-2 win over Youngstown State on Sept. 15. Xavier leads the series with NKU 1-0 after winning 1-0 in overtime last season at NKU in the first season of NCAA Division I action for the Norse.
Xavier's top two scorers are both freshmen, including Tori Doss with three goals and two assists for eight points and Maggie Hare with three goals and an assist for seven points. That's even more encouraging for XU's offense when you consider that no Musketeer had more than three goals or nine points for the entire 2012 season. Last season no XU player had more than three goals, three assists or nine points for the entire season.
On the defensive side, the Musketeers have shut out five of their first seven opponents, including a streak of four straight that included Evansville, at Eastern Kentucky, Cincinnati and at Morehead State. XU also shut out North Dakota in the Musketeers' season opener as part of Purdue's Boilermaker Challenge Cup.
