CINCINNATI --- The Xavier University women's soccer team, 5-0-1, hits the road for a match this Wednesday at undefeated Indiana, 6-0-1, at 7 p.m. The Hoosiers are off to the best start in school history. Xavier's undefeated record is the best six-match start since the 1990 saeson when that team began the season at 8-0.
This is a homecoming of sorts for Xavier fourth-year head coach Woody Sherwood, who spent three seasons as an assistant at Indiana. Under Sherwood's tutelage, the Indiana offense was very successful, scoring 85 goals while winning 31 matches. Sherwood helped the Hoosiers to one of the finest seasons in school history in 2007 as IU finished 13-7-3 and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
Xavier's defense has been strong this season. The Musketeers have shut out five of their first six opponents, including the last four. Junior goalkeeper Katie Markesbery has recorded four straight shutouts and has lowered her goals against average to 0.57.
The Musketeer offense has been given a lift by a pair of freshmen. In fact, Xavier's top two scorers are both freshmen. Tori Doss with three goals and two assists for eight points and Maggie Hare with three goals and an assist for seven points. That's even more encouraging for XU's offense when you consider that no Musketeer had more than three goals or nine points for the entire 2012 season.

Xavier returns home on Friday to host Northern Kentucky at 6:30 p.m. at the Xavier University Soccer Complex.
