Crosstown Rival UC Defeats XU In Women's Soccer


CINCINNATI --- The University of Cincinnati Bearcats defeated the Xavier University Musketeers 3-2 on Thursday night at the Xavier University Soccer Complex in front of a crowd of 707 fans. UC raised its record to 2-4 with the win, while XU fell to 1-6 with the loss.

Cincinnati scored the only goal of the first half as freshman Cara Allred (Batavia, OH/McNicholas) scored on a header off a corner kick from senior Lisa Stephens (Union, MO) at the 31:30 mark.

The score remained UC 1-0 until the 54th minute when the Bearcats were awarded a penalty kick. Senior Amy Mink (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) scored at 53:39 to give UC a 2-0 advantage. UC went up 3-0 ten minutes later at the 63:38 mark as junior Marie Strelka (Trumbull, CT) found the back of the net.

Xavier did not score its first goal until the 76th minute. Junior Shawn Reynolds (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) found the net at 75:55 off a loose ball. Seniors Nicole and Lauren Giesting (Cincinnati/McAuley) earned assists on the play. XU scored again at the 87:34 mark as junior Kristen Ruehlmann (Cincinnati/St. Ursula) drilled a long shot that found the back of the net, cutting the deficit to 3-2. A few late chances didn’t produce a third goal, though, as the visitors held on for the 3-2 win.

Xavier, which has an alumni exhibition match on Saturday at Xavier at 5:00 p.m., plays its final regular season non-conference match on Sunday at Louisville at 1:00 p.m.
