Women's Soccer Opens Season With A Win

OXFORD, OH --- The Xavier University women’s soccer team opened the 2003 season with a 3-1 win at local rival Miami on Friday night. The game was also the season opener for the RedHawks, who are coming off a school record 19-3-2 NCAA Tournament season.

Xavier wasted little time opening the scoring. Freshman Amber Silvis (Georgetown, OH/Western Brown) put XU ahead with a goal just 4:09 into the match. Silvis broke away from the pack and drilled a shot from just inside the penalty box but it was deflected by Miami goalkeeper Leigh Terry. Silvis beat Terry to the loose ball, though, and punched in XU’s first goal of the new season.

Junior Lauren Giesting (Cincinnati/McAuley) scored Xavier’s second goal 34:26 into the match as she exploded to goal and finished off a perfect long pass from midfield from sophomore Laura Merkel (Worthington, OH/Thomas Worthington), who earned XU’s first assist of the year. XU took that 2-0 lead into intermission.

Miami came out strong early in the second half and forced the action, connecting on a goal by Ashley Swinehart off a nice cross from Laura Freel. The MU goal, which came just 1:55 into the second half, cut Xavier’s advantage in half.

The Musketeers answered at the 63:06 mark as Lindsay Yonadi (Boca Raton, FL/Spanish River) drilled a free kick from 30 yards out on the left side. XU now led 3-1 and held off MU the rest of the way.

Miami was credited with a 15-14 shot advantage but Xavier held the advantage in shots on goal at 8-5. Almost every Musketeer shot on goal was a dangerous opportunity.

Xavier travels to Cincinnati on Monday night at 7:00 p.m. to face the Bearcats, who like the RedHawks made last year’s NCAA Tournament Second Round.
