June 7, 2013
Cincinnati, OH. - Third-year head coach Woody Sherwood unveiled the Xavier University women's soccer team's 2013 fall schedule, which will begin a new era in the BIG EAST. The schedule also highlights two Big 10 opponents and four 2012 NCAA Tournament teams.
"We are very excited about the 2013 schedule," Sherwood said. "It will be one of the most challenging schedules Xavier has faced in years, but we feel we are ready for the challenge. There are six teams on the schedule who have some Top 25 history."
A new era for Xavier Women's Soccer in the BIG EAST will begin on Thursday, Sept. 26 as the Musketeers travel to Queens, N.Y. for a showdown with BIG EAST member, St. John's.
"The BIG EAST portion of the schedule is special as it presents an opportunity to be on a national soccer stage on a regular basis the entire season," Sherwood said. "After a great spring season, our players and staff are excited to see what we can do this fall."
Xavier will open up BIG EAST play at home against Villanova on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 6:30 p.m. The BIG EAST portion of the schedule will put the Musketeers up against two 2012 NCAA Tournament teams; one game on the road at Georgetown and a home matchup with Marquette on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 1:00 p.m.
Regular season play will take the Musketeers on the road for a two-game stand in West Lafayette, Ind. beginning with North Dakota on Friday, Aug. 23 and ending on Sunday with a match against Big 10 opponent Purdue. The Musketeers will return home for their first regular season home match against Evansville on Wednesday, Sept. 4 at 7:00 p.m.
In the heart of the non-conference schedule, Xavier will travel back to Indiana, this time to Bloomington for a highlight matchup with another Big 10 conference foe, Indiana. During Xavier's impressive spring season, the Musketeers earned a draw with the visiting Hoosiers.
Xavier will begin the season on the road as the team travels to South Bend for an exhibition game against 2012 NCAA Tournament team Notre Dame on August 14. The Musketeers will then open up their season at home on Saturday, Aug. 17, in an exhibition game against Miami (OH), which advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament a season ago.
The Musketeers are coming off a record-setting spring season as they secured an undefeated record of 4-0-1, marking the first time in program history having an undefeated record during the spring season. During the spring, Xavier scored 13 goals while only allowing three.
