Women's Soccer Team Completes An Undefeated Spring Season
April 13, 2013
CINCINNATI --- The Xavier University women`s soccer team finished the spring season with a resounding 3-0 victory over visiting Ohio University on Saturday night at the Xavier Soccer Complex. Xavier finished the spring with a 4-0-1 record, marking the first time on record that a Xavier women's soccer team has completed an undefeated spring season.
Erin McGauley opened up the scoring with a perfect strike in the upper corner from 25 yards out. Mariah Whitaker nearly made it 2-0 in the 59th minute with a shot which hit the left post and ricocheted across the goal, striking the right post but never crossing the line. Seconds later Catherine Allon hit the crossbar on another attempt.
"Ohio is very good at getting high pressure on the ball," said head coach Woody Sherwood. "They make it very difficult to play unless you are able to move the ball quickly. They are extremely well organized and did a nice job of creating a couple of quality chances for themselves in the first half. To our credit, we got a few very good goals off of counterattacks. When we moved the ball tonight, we were fun to watch play. I think our team has definitely turned the corner in terms of being able to consistently put a good product on the field. It was an entertaining spring for those who were able to watch us play. The soccer was really attractive and we found the back of the net consistently for the first time since we took over the program. We look forward to continuing where we left off this coming fall."
Xavier will open the 2013 season in South Bend vs. the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.
For the record, the Musketeers scored 13 goals in five spring games, while conceding only three.
