Women's Soccer Remains Undefeated In Spring Season
April 6, 2013
CINCINNATI --- Returning to action after less than 24 hours rest, the Xavier University women’s soccer team earned an impressive 0-0 draw with visiting Indiana University in spring season action on Saturday at the Xavier Soccer Complex. Xavier has yet to lose this spring and has posted an impressive 3-0-1 record with 10 goals scored and only three allowed.
Indiana controlled much of the first twenty minutes of play. The Musketeers dodged a couple of early chances by Indiana with some help from goalkeeper Katie Markesbery as well as the crossbar. As the half wore on, Xavier settled in and produced several dangerous chances themselves. The second half saw Xavier turn up the pressure defensively, which allowed the Musketeers to control most of the action.
Mariah Whitaker was voted Player of the Game for both matches this weekend by her teammates.
“We have been looking forward to this rematch from the fall for some time,” said Xavier head coach Woody Sherwood. “Indiana and we both only graduated a few players so we knew this would be a good measuring stick to see just how far we have come in the past three months. Last fall it was pretty one-sided in Indiana’s favor on the scoreboard. It was a completely different game this time around and was really rewarding for us to see how far we have come in a short time. We knew we had something special going this spring and were anxious to test it with a great opponent like Indiana. IU has a lot of depth and some exceptional talent. The second half effort was outstanding in spite of the quick turnaround from Friday’s game.”
Xavier concludes its spring season Saturday, April 13 when it will host Ohio University at 6:00 p.m.
