CINCINNATI -- The Xavier women's soccer team earned a convincing 4-1 victory over Northern Kentucky University Wednesday night in the first home match of the 2012 spring season. Bridget Tully led the Musketeers with two goals on the night, both coming in the first of three 30-minute periods.
In the second period, NKU had a chance to cut the deficit to one on a penalty kick but Katie Markesbery made a brilliant save, diving to her left to keep the ball out of the net. Laura Rao made it 3-0 in the second period and Ashton Green posted final goal for Xavier in the third period. Jen Perri made a spectacular save of her own in the third frame to preserve the 3-0 victory.
"I thought the first 30 minutes was the best we have played since taking over two years ago," said head coach Woody Sherwod. "The ball movement was extremely good and that possession led to some dangerous chances. I was disappointed with the performance in the second period. Give NKU credit, they took the play to us for a good portion of the period. The third period we played better and were able to create some more good chances. It was nice to see all the work we have put in since December pay off."
Xavier will head to Wright State this Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff. The Musketeers conclude their spring season with a home game April 14 at 5 p.m.
